Jan
Hoppie, situated in Bonnievale, is a rustic yet comfortable and
romantic old fashioned farm cottage in a peaceful setting overlooking
the Breede River Valley. Named after a labourer who arrived out
of the blue and became a local legend, Jan Hoppie is a simple farm
cottage appointed above vineyards and exuding local character.
The approach
to the cottage passes a slightly disheveled ensemble of implements
and work sheds, all needed to keep this wine and dairy farm alive.
However, this initial impression dissolves as one enters the sweet
scent of reed ceilings, old wood furniture and lingering smoke
from yesterday’s open-hearth fire. The cottage retains its
humble beginnings and it could be this simple charm that explains
the many return visits.
The cottage is peppered with interesting
artifacts, like an original cobbler’s table for the braai
goodies, old paraffin lamps, farm tools, Victorian taps and bath
and a stable door for front door.
The pleasant
beskuit-en-koffie front stoep yields picturesque views across
the valley, the river (about 950m away), and the mountains beyond.
To make your stay even more comfortable, hosts Janie and Thys
Wentzel throw in free wood, candles and blitz.
